BEST OF PORTUGAL
S.F. to N.Y. to Lisbon TWA
By train to Faro
, Lisbon, Obidos, Coimbra and Oporto
We stayed at the Hotel Principe in Lisboa
We took the Metro to Baixa city center
The city square is called D.Pedro Square but is know as Rossio Sq.
Praca do Comercio is the transportation hub. Ferries leave and arrive, in
front of the hub, on the river Tejo.
We took a ride on the ferries on the Tejo river over to the R.R. depot.
We had a rail pass and traveled to Sintra, Faro, Obidos and Oporto.
Sintra is amazing with it’s castles and is a quaint city.
One castle is Castelo das Mouras that we visited. It is a 12th
century castle.
The 1998 Expo afforded the country to modernize it’s metro
system including many stations with original works of art
and murals made of tile.
The Vasco da Garma Bridge across the Tejo river is the longest in
Europe 18 km.
The Portuguese Pavilion was designed to represent Portugal in the
1998 Expo.
We took the train to Obidos having to transfer at Cacem
When we saw the train station, at Obidos, (broken down depot, with the sign for the city hanging
at an angle) we got off on the gravel (only ones to disembark) we weren't sure we wanted
to leave the train. We had a two mile walk in this deserted area before we found the road up to
the castle. At the castle we encountered another American couple, that had stayed overnight there,
inquiring if we had help with our luggage. They were very unhappy with the cold accommodations.
We took the ferry across the Tejo river to catch the train to Faro. We stayed at the Afonso III Residencial
overnight. The bathroom had a new(within the last 20 years) sink installed, but it was to big causing the
bathroom door not to close.
From Faro we took a bus to Sevilla Spain for an overnight stay.We took a tour trolley, we toured the bull ring
and visited the Sevilla Cathedral.
We visited the Spanish Pavilion from the 1929 World Expo and then returned by bus to Faro.
We took the train to Amarante and then switched to a narrow gauge train.
We took a ride down the Doro river. Arriving back at Lisbon on St. Patrick's Day, as next took the train
to Caesdo Sadre and ride the electric train to Cascals along to Estoril Coast.
Cascals is a fishing atown on the edge of a wide bay.
Our final adventure was to the Gulbenkeqn Museum before leaving for home.
